The iconoclastic director of JFK, Natural Born Killers, Platoon, and Salvador, Oliver Stone has long been considered one of cinema’s greatest provocateurs. With multiple international honours including two Academy Awards, Stone regularly achieves the near impossible: both box office success and critical acclaim. Most recently he has taken on one of the most potentially inflammatory subjects – the still-raw events of September 11 – and focussed on the intensely personal human story behind the politics, resulting in the powerful and claustrophobic World Trade Center.

Oliver StoneFor this Skillset Stanley Kubrick Masterclass Stone will be joined by his World Trade Center collaborator, the celebrated Director of Photography, Seamus McGarvey, whose background in music video (with credits from The Rolling Stones to PJ Harvey), artist film & video (collaborations with Sam Taylor-Wood), and career in feature films from The Hours to Along Came Polly, have made him one of the most sought-after DoP’s in the international industry.

Stone and McGarvey will be in conversation with the filmmaker and critic, Richard Jobson and their Masterclass will be followed by a screening of World Trade Center.

World Trade Center (cert 12A)

September 11, 2001 was an unusually warm day in New York. Will Jimeno, an officer with the Port Authority Police Department, was tempted to take a day off but ultimately decided that he would go to work. Sergeant John McLoughlin, a respected veteran of the PAPD, had been up for hours – a requirement of his daily 1 hour trek to the city. They and their colleagues make their way to midtown Manhattan, just like they do any other day. Only this wasn’t any other day.

The against-all-odds rescue of two Port Authority cops (Nicolas Cage and Michael Peña) from beneath rubble of the twin towers, while their despairing wives (Maria Bello and Maggie Gyllenhaal) face an agonising wait to hear their fate, is sombre, personal, patriotic, and respectful of its subject.
